“Persuasion - Manchester
Similarly, the staging avoids literalism; Alex Lowde - already a shoo-in for Designer of the Year when Pygmalion is also taken into account - has designed a large white box, on two levels, with a strip of light running round the middle. Unexpectedly... this - twice - literally shifts on its axis at key emotional moments in the heroine Ann Elliot’s Life, creating an ongoing, jagged, abstract shape which the performers are forced to negotiate their way around. It works beautifully.”
“Pygmalion - Headlong
All of this takes place in Alex Lowde’s gorgeous set. Headlong have always had a penchant for designing sumptuous, aesthetically pleasing sets, but this has to be their best yet. On the surface, Lowde’s set might look fantastic - lilac walls, minimalist furniture and perspex rooms on struts - but there’s so much more to it than pure visual delight. The set cleverly and efficiently serves the directorial purpose, and both draws audiences in and pushes them away when required. Lowde’s costume designs are also stylish and sleek, using the hipster image to show an elevated, exclusive and aspirational social group in the modern word. ”
“Krapp’s Last Tape -Sheffield
Alex Lowde’s set confines Krapp within a peer-through shed-like habitat - a cluttered time capsule that slowly revolves to offer the audience an oterhworldly 3D perspective on a life reduced to playback memories, scratchily relayed to the outsie world through a series of bare speaker cones.”
